I read an article awhile back that explored the meaning and true ramifications of commitment. Now every time I’m preparing to take on a task related to one of my goals my Inner Voice starts in: “So. Patti. Are you interested in doing this? Hoping to do this? Wishing you could do this? Contemplating doing this? Being persuaded, provoked, or ‘guilted’ into doing this? Or are you really, truly, deeply committed to doing this? What is it? Really?”

Being committed means that I absolutely, positively, truly am promising to focus, buckle down, and do whatever it takes to get the job done. No matter what. Even if it gets hard. Even if it isn’t convenient or requires a sacrifice. I’m going to work at it and get it done. I’m committed. It’s happening. And I’m ready for Divine Providence to join in and take the leap with me.

Taking it seriously. Seeing it through. That’s what it’s all about. It’s amazing what happens when you commit and so frustrating when you can’t quite do it, for whatever reason.

That said, next time you’re about to set a goal, make a promise, tackle a project, accept an invitation, enter into a relationship, take a job, join an organization, or launch a business, it’s probably wise to hit PAUSE first. Ask yourself, are you doing it because it sounds interesting or exciting? Because you have nothing else to do? Because everyone else is doing it? Because it will get someone off your back? Because you really just wish you could do it? Or are you truly, deeply, honestly, to the depth of your soul ready to commit?

Considering what commitment really is and what it requires may help you sort through and weed out what’s fantasy, wishful thinking, going through the motions, dabbling, empty promises (to yourself or to others), or maybe even a dysfunctional way of living. If so, strike those items to which you can’t commit from the list. Move on. Make room for what really inspires you to follow through and finish. It will feel so much better.
